Balloon Facts!
Some interesting information about latex balloons.
Lost Balloons
Have you ever lost your balloon and watched it fly away into the sky? Did you know, 95% of lost balloons rise all the way up to a height of 8km! At this height they freeze and shatter into spaghetti like pieces before falling back to the earth.
Latex Balloons
Our balloons at Party Shop are made from 100% latex. This means that no synthetic plastics are added to our balloons! Latex is a biodegradable substance that is made from the sap harvested from trees. A small slit is cut into the tree and the sap that pours out is collected in a cup. The best part is that the tree is not harmed at all from this process!
Balloons and the Environment
Did you know that latex balloons are environmentally friendly? Have you ever noticed how when you leave your balloons out in the sun they begin to frost? (the colour begins to fade) That is because they are already starting to decompose! Latex balloons decompose naturally in sunlight and rain. In fact they decompose at the same rate as a leaf from an oak tree!
Tip: Balloons add atmosphere to any party or function. BUT balloons don't like atmosphere! NEVER plan balloon arrangements for outside, but if you really have to, then make sure they are sheltered and in the shade.
Balloons and Animals
Interesting fact: When an animal swallows a piece of balloon it will just pass through the digestive system without harming the animal!
The First Balloon Ever
The first latex balloon was made in 1824 by Professor Michael Faraday. He created it for his scientific experiments involving Hydrogen. The First Foil Balloon was made for the New York Ballet in the late 1970's.
Fun Fact!
A helium filled balloon that is 33m in diameter can lift a weight of about 15 000kg!
